Week One Highlights

The first week with Mackey was one of elation (thanks to lots of endorphins and oxytocin!) and wonder. Lack of sleep didn't feel like sleep deprivation--it was hard not to watch her sleep. We would stare at her in amazement thinking about how she had been in my belly, how she was our daughter, how we were parents, etc. And we talked about all the cliches we heard from new parents that seemed to make much more sense now.

During the first week, Mackey was really focused on eating and sleeping. She also got acquainted with her new digs--her crib, her swing, and Daddy's lap, shoulder, and chest (some of her favorite places to hang out).

Even in one short week, we could see her transform--her face got fuller, her eyes were less puffy, and her features became more refined. Her hair, a medium brown at birth, keeps getting lighter a if she is destined to be a towhead after all. She still has some downy hair--on her shoulders, the sides of her face, and the edges of her ears. Soft little downy hair that we just want to touch.

There is no question that she looks like her Daddy. Watching them sleep in profile is like seeing Ashley and Mini-Me. While I can absolutely be sure that she came out of me, I don't see much resemblance yet. Perhaps it's all on the inside.

It was fun to give Mackey her first sponge bath. We really could see her eyes widen and get bright, probably out of curiosity about the experience. I think she liked the sensation of the warm wash cloth, and she even tolerated having her hair washed. In fact, one of her favorite parts of bath time is when I dry her hair. Ah...here is one way she takes after me--she loves having her hair done!

We had a six-day visit with the pediatrician, who looked Mackey over and indicated that everything looked good. She had lost six ounces since she was born (which was normal), but we were told that we needed to get her back up to her birth weight by her two week appointment. So, with that goal in mind, we set out to put about an ounce on her per day. Go boobs, go!!
